Porsche and the future of electric mobility
Porsche is setting the course for the future of electric mobility with technical innovations and significant investment.
As early as 1900, the Lohner-Porsche was already running purely on electricity. In the 21st century, Porsche has made early preparations for a future with electric cars. Construction of a hybrid model was announced in 2005 and the Cayenne S Hybrid entered series production in 2010. By 2014, Porsche had already added three plug-in-hybrids to its range. In 2015, Porsche presented the study of the first purely electric sports saloon from Zuffenhausen – the Mission E.
Like all Porsche models, the Mission E is a true sports car with driving performance to match: with more than 600 horsepower, it accelerates from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in less than 3.5 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of over 250 kilometres per hour. Just as importantly, the range is in excess of 500 kilometres. To add to this, the Mission E can be recharged to around 80 per cent of its total capacity in just 15 minutes. An innovative inductive charging system for home garages will also be available for it.
To ensure that fully electric cars can keep moving, Porsche is involved in the efforts to build the IONITY pan-European fast charging network. Around 400 fast charging stations are set to be installed across Europe by 2020 with the other partners in the joint venture – Audi, BMW, Daimler and Ford – and several petrol station chains. The High-Power Charging (HPC) points will be publicly accessible and will be positioned at a distance of around 120 kilometres from each other. They will offer the Combined Charging System (CCS) European standard and have a charging capacity of up to 350 kilowatts.
For Porsche, Mission E not only involves building the electric sports car at the Zuffenhausen site, but also significant investment at the headquarters. The engine plant, for instance, will be converted for the production of electric drives. Investments are also being made in body construction and in the Weissach development centre in order to get Porsche in top condition for the electric future. In Zuffenhausen alone, more than 1,000 new jobs will be created by 2020 and more than 700 million euros will be invested in the state-of-the-art production facility.
