Mission E – the first fully electric Porsche sports car
With the Mission E study, Porsche has laid the foundations for one of the most significant developments in the history of the brand. The first fully electric sports car will enter series production in 2019.
At IAA 2015, Porsche literally fuelled anticipation of the car of the future. In unveiling Mission E, the brand presented the first fully electric sports car in its history. This realistic study combines a number of unique selling points: the unmistakable, emotionally appealing design of a sleek Porsche sports car, sporty E-Performance and the groundbreaking everyday capability of the first-ever 800-volt system. The sports car features four doors, four individual seats, over 440 kilowatts (600 horsepower) of system power, a driving range of over 500 kilometres, all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering. Thanks to the high voltage, the Mission E can be recharged to a level of approximately 80 per cent in around 15 minutes.
The drive of the Mission E is completely new and yet, in a typical Porsche move, has undergone testing in motorsport. Two permanent synchronous motors (PSM), similar to those used in the Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid, are deployed for acceleration and also for recovering energy under braking. They catapult the Mission E to a speed of 100 kilometres per hour in less than 3.5 seconds, reaching 200 kilometres per hour in under 12 seconds. Another typical Porsche feature is the lightweight design with optimum weight distribution and a low centre of gravity. The battery, which is based on the latest lithium-ion technology, extends along the full length of the floor of the car between the front and rear axle. This ensures that the weight is evenly distributed across both drive axles, delivering excellent balance.
However, a Porsche is not just about an emotional attachment to sportiness – it also has to demonstrate its reliability in everyday use. This is why the Mission E can cover more than 500 kilometres with a single battery charge and take on enough energy for around 400 kilometres in less than 15 minutes. How? Ever the pioneer, Porsche has deployed 800-volt technology for the first time. Corresponding to twice the level of voltage currently used in electric cars, this ensures shorter charging times and reduced weight as lighter copper cables featuring a smaller cross section are sufficient for the purpose of energy transport.
This is also a trailblazing study in terms of the interior, with the driver able to tap into a new world thanks to the experimental display and operation concept. Intuitive, fast and free of distractions, this is an innovation for the sports car of tomorrow. The intricate driver’s display is curved, low-profile and free-standing, with five round instruments shown on the electronic instrument cluster. This virtual depiction of a typical Porsche hallmark is achieved using OLED technology.
