Porsche 356 A 1600 Speedster
When the Porsche 356 A takes over from the 356 in the autumn of 1955, the Speedster remains in the model range alongside the coupé and the cabriolet. This purist sports car has been in production for a year and enjoys huge popularity in the USA. The steel body with its small, removable windscreen and 35 millimetre lower doors features a simple folding top and side windows that slot into the door. With the stripped down interior and racing bucket seats, the Speedster is perfectly set-up for competition. Porsche revamps the suspension of the 356 A – now fitted with 15 inch tyres – with an anti-roll bar on the front axle and retuned springs and dampers. Speedster devotees can choose between 1.6 litre engines producing either 60 or 75 hp. Porsche builds 2,910 units of the 356 A Speedster, which are among the less expensive sports cars from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen sold in the USA. Today, they are amongst the most valuable collector’s items.
