In 1971 Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko established a historical course record: averaging a speed of 222.30 km/h (138.13 mph), they clocked up 5,335.16 kilometres (3,315.11 miles) in the Le Mans 24-hour race. Yet again, Porsche’s engineers had come up with some brilliant ways of improving the aerodynamics and weight. The short-tail version 917 sports shark’s fins on both sides of the rear lid and the frame is made from light magnesium.
