Exactly 110 years after Ferdinand Porsche built the first vehicle with a hybrid drive, Porsche revisited this visionary drive concept in the near-production GT R (“Race sport”) series car. The new type of hybrid system was specially developed for a race car and differs significantly from conventional hybrid systems in its layout and components. For instance, an electric drive system on the front axle with two 60-kW electric motors supplements the 480-HP four-liter six-cylinder flat engine at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. Instead of the batteries that are typically used in street hybrid vehicles, a flywheel accumulator, which is housed next to the driver in the interior, supplies the electrical energy to drive the electric motors.
