New dynamics

Porsche Team Germany

As a Premium Partner of the Deutsche Tennis Bund (DTB – German Tennis Association), Porsche has also been the sponsor of Porsche Team Germany since 2012. This season, Mona Barthel, Annika Beck, Anna-Lena Friedsam, Julia Görges, Anna-Lena Grönefeld, Angelique Kerber, Sabine Lisicki, Andrea Petkovic, Laura Siegemund and Carina Witthöft all belong to the team captained by national coach Barbara Rittner.

Women’s tennis in Germany has enjoyed a new dynamism ever since Porsche started its commitment. Spearheaded by Angelique Kerber, Porsche Team Germany reached the Fed Cup final for the first time in 22 years in 2014. The Porsche Brand Ambassador sparked a new enthusiasm for tennis in Germany when she celebrated her first career Grand Slam win at the Australian Open. After successfully defending her title at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, she went on to simultaneously claim the US Open and the world No. 1 ranking. She was also the runner-up at both Wimbledon and the WTA Finals in Singapore and won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio. At the end of the fantastic season, she was voted “Sportswoman of the Year” in Germany.

Two players made their debut for Porsche Team Germany in February 2017: Carina Witthöft, who was sponsored in the Porsche Talent Team until 2016, and Laura Siegemund teamed up to play the doubles in the Fed Cup first round tie against USA. Before the start of the season, Anna-Lena Friedsam was added to the Porsche Team Germany squad. Like Annika Beck and Carina Witthöft before her, she was also helped on her way to becoming a world class player via the Porsche Talent Team Germany set-up.

The cooperation between the DTB and Porsche, which also includes the support given to hopeful up-and-coming players in the Porsche Talent Team Germany, has resulted in German women’s tennis reaching a new level. “We want German players to also be successful as a team,” said Dr Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. Also close to Porsche’s heart is the development of Germany’s junior players. The success of the top players will also rub off onto the many talented youngsters. “Playing tennis is far more fun for youngsters when they have role models. We want to play our part in making sure there are such role models in the future too,” continued Dr Oliver Blume.
